Online customers are kings. They have an infinite number of options for choosing the right online store and just as many demands on the product and store. But retailers are by no means powerless. With various tools and the right solution, they can meet the needs of their customers, become attractive to even more customers, minimize shopping cart abandonment and build long-term customer relationships. In order to understand customer wishes and find the right solution, it is worth taking their perspective.

Satisfied customers thanks to payment diversity
Imagine the following scenario: You are looking for a particular table for your living room. A designer piece that is correspondingly expensive, hard to find and also a popular object for counterfeiters. Well prepared, you set off on your search and find what you are looking for in a small online store. But then you are disappointed: the store does not offer purchase on account, payment by installments or payment via PayPal. You’re not really prepared to finance the expensive piece of furniture in one go – especially not if you can’t pay for it in the usual way. So you cancel the purchase.
This scenario is widespread, as the comparison platform Capterra found out in an online survey in 2020. According to the survey, almost two thirds (60 percent) of online shoppers abandon their purchase or switch to a competitor if their preferred payment method is not offered at checkout.¹ For online store operators, this means that the more numerous and flexible the payment methods offered, the lower the risk of abandoned purchases.
Reach more customers through international sales
But back to the designer table. You continue to browse the internet and find what you are looking for: A store in the USA offers the table at the original price, the shipping costs are reasonable, you can pay the price in installments subject to creditworthiness and use your favorite payment provider – PayPal. You order the table. And, as the market researcher Nielsen found out last year, you are by no means alone. More and more consumers are willing to order goods from abroad. While 57% of online shoppers worldwide had already made a purchase from a foreign retailer in 2019, this figure rose to 68% in 2020.²

From a retailer’s perspective, this development offers great opportunities, but also obligations: If you want to deliver online, you have to meet the high demands of potential customers all over the world, position yourself internationally and offer flexible financing options in addition to the locally preferred payment method. This is the only way for retailers to stand out from the competition. Online payment providers such as PayPal offer great solutions for this.
PayPal Checkout: The new all-in-one solution for your eCommerce success
The new PayPal Checkout is the technical and functional upgrade to PayPal PLUS: With the latest technology, ongoing updates and innovations as well as improved fraud protection, PayPal’s new all-in-one solution can make your JTL-Shop number one for customers. PayPal Checkout is the right choice for your business – whether you are new to eCommerce or an experienced PayPal PLUS user.
As the most popular German payment provider, PayPal creates trust
According to a 2020 study by market research institute ibi research, 85% of Germans have already paid with PayPal and four out of five online shoppers have actively used the payment provider for at least one purchase in the past year. The majority of Germans consider PayPal to be the most user-friendly (81%) and secure (71%) payment method.⁴
In short: There is no way around PayPal if you are dealing with the setup of your JTL-Shop. With PayPal Checkout, you can also integrate the most popular payment methods into your JTL-Shop. These include payment with PayPal, credit card, direct debit and, if available for your business, purchase on account. In addition, PayPal Checkout includes more than ten local payment methods for optimized international sales.

While customers in Germany pay with Giropay, for example, customers from the Netherlands can use iDeal as usual. Your customers from abroad can pay conveniently in their preferred way. This will also reach customers who do not have a PayPal account. The new PayPal Checkout gives you access to more than 425 million customers in over 200 markets worldwide.
Buy first, pay later: "Pay later" in the new PayPal Checkout
In addition to the new local payment methods, PayPal Checkout bundles PayPal’s “Pay later” listings. For example, you can place the “Pay later” button or dynamic banners for PayPal installment payments at different points in the payment process and draw your customers’ attention to PayPal installment payments⁵ and payment after 30 days earlier in the checkout process. You also have the option of offering your customers 0% financing for PayPal installment payments⁶.
PayPal Checkout also includes a new solution for purchasing on account, which PayPal is implementing together with Ratepay. Purchase on account is still one of the most popular payment methods for Germans when shopping online. The new invoice purchase with Ratepay offers additional advantages, as merchants receive the purchase amount immediately, while customers have a payment term of 30 days.
