Corona has turned a lot of things upside down, especially in the catering industry. They were suddenly faced with completely new challenges. As the owners of the Leipzig-based Globus Döner restaurant, we also had to stop our on-site consumption from one day to the next and develop new ideas to avoid becoming dependent on large providers such as Lieferando. However, as necessity is known to be the mother of creativity, we quickly developed an online ordering system with the solutions from JTL and our dedicated service partner knowmates that has potential beyond the pandemic.
Put together your own kebab just like in the store
When we sat down together for the first time, it quickly became clear that the system should definitely meet the following requirement: customers should still be able to put together their meals individually, just as they were used to when eating on site in our stores. After all, this freedom was what set us apart. The food they put together was then to be sent to us via a pre-order for collection at a later date. We took on this challenge.

JTL-Wawi as the technical basis
With knowmates GmbH, we immediately had the right service partner at our side and quickly realized that the JTL solutions met our requirements. Within three days, we set up the JTL-Wawi ERP system to first systematically manage the categories and images of our food. JTL-Worker was then used to “pick up” the orders from the shop. At the same time, the respective invoice was automatically sent to the customer via JTL-Workflows.
Now they needed a “digital counter” that was easy to use and self-explanatory for both customers and employees – JTL-Shop was quickly chosen. First, knowmates GmbH developed a template based on the corporate design of Globus Döner. The JTL configurator in turn formed the technical basis for allowing guests to put together their own meals. With the “Gastro-Order” plugin, the knowmates team developed the interface to JTL-Wawi. This extension ensured that store employees could use JTL-Shop without having to operate the ERP system at the same time. Further options for guests, such as placing pre-orders or setting a pick-up window, were implemented step by step. Thanks to the responsive design, many customers also use the option to place orders on their smartphone while on the move – without having to eat the kebab off the shelf.
By expanding the store with the payment provider mollie, we were also able to quickly offer different payment options, including Apple Pay, credit cards, PayPal and SOFORT Überweisung. The instant payment system also ensured a smooth process in the store: as pick-up customers had already paid online, all they had to do was enter their purchase order ID and they could take their food straight away.
Smooth processes, even at peak times
Our employees on the “other side” of the “digital counter” also got on really well with the system right from the start. The web-based administration interface developed by knowmates was intuitive to use and allowed orders to be quickly and easily set to “ready to collect”, “finished” or “collected”. Thanks to the simple handling, guests were able to “tick off” the individual ingredients they wanted for their dishes step by step. A notification tone also helped us in the team not to overlook incoming orders, even when there was a lot to do and we couldn’t regularly look at the checkout and ordering terminal. When large companies, such as BMW, liked to order food for 200 employees at once, we also had the option of “closing” the “online counter” via the front end in order to process the large order first.
JTL ordering system also planned for other stores
Initially, we only introduced the system in one branch in Leipzig. So far, however, everyone is more than satisfied with the use of the JTL-Shop in combination with the knowmates “Gastro-Order” plugin. Not only does it help us avoid long waiting times, it has also made our daily routine much easier.
We are therefore planning to use the ordering system in other stores in the future. Thanks to this successful implementation and cooperation with knowmates and JTL software, we should soon be able to satisfy the hunger of even more customers in a larger catchment area.
By using our JTL-based solution, Globus Döner enables its customers to order online. This not only drastically reduces the waiting time in the store, customers can also place more extensive pre-orders, use other payment methods and redeem discounts. This opens up another sales channel for the operator, where no sales commission is charged. must be paid.
