Childproofing the future – How Bomi is mastering online business with JTL & GLS
A medium-sized online retailer that wants to offer durable products for families not only has to deliver quality – it also has to focus on stability in terms of logistics, stock and system processes. This is precisely the path that Bomi-Handels GmbH from Emsland has taken. What began as a project close to the hearts of two siblings has developed into a fast-growing eCommerce company with over 100,000 sales orders per year within just a few years. This was also made possible by the cooperation with strong partners: JTL as the technological basis and GLS as a reliable logistics service provider.
From start-up to growth company
Bomi-Handels GmbH was founded in 2017 and has developed into a successful medium-sized online retailer in the children’s furniture and door safety gate sector within just a few years. The idea behind the business model: to offer high-quality, TÜV-certified products for family households – with a clear focus on safety, durability and ease of use.
The company started out with a small product range and a warehouse measuring around 1,000 m². Today, Bomi operates a modern logistics area with over 4,500 m² and around 6,000 storage spaces. Online sales are carried out both via the company’s own store and via relevant marketplaces. The range now comprises over 100 items – including individually configurable door guards, children’s furniture and additional accessories.
The increasing demand for safe and flexible products for family households placed new demands on warehousing, shipping and system processes. The many product variants and work with parts lists in particular led to growing complexity. In order to manage this efficiently and strategically secure growth, the course was set early on for a scalable system landscape.
With around 100,000 orders a year, Bomi is now one of the established providers in its segment – and proves how medium-sized online retailers can grow successfully with clear positioning, high-quality products and the right partners.
JTL as the foundation of success
The technical foundations for Bomi’s steady growth were laid early on: The decision to use the ERP system JTL-Wawi – a system that founder Matthias Scheibe was familiar with from previous projects – was made at the start of the company. The company started with JTL-Wawi version 0.9 and continued to develop in parallel with the system.
With the expansion of warehouse capacity to 4,500 m² and the increasing order situation, the previous warehouse solution had reached its limits. The switch to JTL-WMS was the logical next step. This made it possible to work largely independently. Processes such as order preparation, packaging and the creation of shipping labels now run directly in the warehouse – without any detours via the office.
With JTL-WMS, the 4,500 m² warehouse runs practically flawlessly.
Another advantage: the random warehousing at Bomi can be efficiently mapped with JTL-WMS. The items are put together as required using parts lists – for example, for individually configurable door protection grilles, where various basic elements and extensions are combined. The system reliably supports both picking and replenishment processes.
Process optimization in the warehouse with JTL-WMS
By using JTL-WMS, Bomi was able to consistently modernize its warehouse processes. A central element is the use of so-called shuttle racks, in which several pallet spaces are arranged one behind the other. In order to work efficiently here, the warehouse was divided into two areas: a picking area with directly accessible items on shelves at the packing tables, and a separate replenishment area from which required items are provided as required.
We said that the warehouse has to run itself. This is now possible with JTL-WMS and we no longer have any work at all with it in the office.
Many Bomi products are not pre-assembled, but are only put together from individual parts when the order is created. Different elements are often combined, especially in the area of door guards – such as a 90 cm basic module with an additional 60 cm extension. Order preparation is therefore based on parts lists, which is reliably supported by JTL-WMS.
Logistical challenge: cleverly shipping bulky products with GLS
Many products in the Bomi range – especially door safety gates – significantly exceed standard package dimensions. Heights from 77 cm and widths of over one meter make shipping with standard service providers difficult. For Bomi, this meant high additional costs or limited shipping options.
Behind the smooth process at Bomi is a close, cooperative partnership with JTL and GLS.
In GLS, the company found a reliable partner that also handles bulky shipments efficiently and on favorable terms. A decisive advantage in day-to-day business, especially with high shipping volumes. In addition to pure logistics, GLS impressed with its close coordination, short communication channels and solution-oriented cooperation – an important building block for smooth processes and satisfied customers. “The cooperation with GLS is reliable and uncomplicated – our parcels arrive quickly and many customers are happy to use the requested delivery. The fair shipping conditions are also an important factor for us. We also particularly appreciate the personal contact and the short communication channels “, says Matthias.
Teamwork for satisfied customers: Bomi, JTL & GLS
Behind the smooth process at Bomi is a close, cooperative partnership. JTL provides the technical basis for efficient warehousing and shipping processes, while GLS ensures reliable delivery. It is not just the individual service that is important, but the interaction: clear contacts, quick feedback and practical solutions ensure that challenges in day-to-day business can be solved quickly. The result is a system that scales – and impresses customers.
Growing efficiently with the right partners
Bomi’s success story shows how medium-sized online retailers can achieve sustainable growth with a clear product focus, a sound process strategy and the right partners. The combination of a scalable system landscape with JTL and a reliable logistics solution via GLS has enabled the company to master complex requirements efficiently – from the warehouse to the customer.
