Cashless payment with SumUp: 1st month free of charge now!
Cashless payment is becoming increasingly important in the German retail sector. The request “By card, please” is now part of customer satisfaction and an important sales driver. In today’s blog post, we reveal why it is also worthwhile for small retailers to offer card payments. At the end, you can look forward to a promotion with our partner SumUp, which will give you a particularly cost-effective start in the world of cashless payments.
Card payment as a growth driver in the German retail sector
The share of sales generated by card payments is increasing: As a study by the EHI Retail Institute documents, the majority of sales were already generated by cashless payments in 2018. And the positive trend is continuing. Nowadays, it is therefore a matter of course for customers to pull out their card when paying – and to react with disillusionment if the retailer only accepts cash.
Surprisingly, however, this still applies to the majority of German retailers: according to our payment partner SumUp, 60% do not yet accept card payments. “Our data shows that sales increase by up to 30% thanks to the acceptance of card payments in stores,” says James Henry, Head of Sales & Partnerships at the British financial technology company.
There are other reasons for listing card payments in addition to the increase in sales:
Advantages of cashless payment
Increased customer satisfaction
Addressing a larger customer base
Large sums of money land safely and directly in your account
Card payments encourage impulse purchases
Positive image through customer perception as a professional retailer
Why are German retailers so reluctant?
For small businesses in particular, the use of stationary EC terminals is associated with comparatively high entry costs. In addition to purchasing the hardware, there is often a monthly flat fee. Many providers also require a so-called minimum purchase of transactions. The often complex set-up, daily handling and long contract terms with the respective providers are also perceived as stumbling blocks.
Cashless and mobile payments with SumUp
Mobile card readers offer an alternative here: unlike stationary systems, they do not communicate with the cash register, but with an app. In many cases, the devices run on a rechargeable battery and can also be operated away from the power supply. This makes them attractive for retailers who sell at trade fairs and markets, for example, or deliver goods directly to customers’ doorsteps.
Our partner SumUp also offers a very beginner-friendly pricing model that does not require monthly flat rates or long contract terms. This should be of particular interest to those of you who only process a few transactions a month or are just starting out with a retail business and are not yet able to estimate the number of cashless payment transactions.
